If Your Pet Just Passed Away

What to do when your pet dies at home

If this just happened, take a breath — you don't have to figure everything out right now. Here's what to know, whether it's the middle of the afternoon or the middle of the night.

You don't have to rush

A pet's body can safely stay at home for several hours in a cool room. It's normal for muscles to twitch or for fluids to be released — this is a natural part of the process, not a sign anything is wrong.

Make them comfortable

If you're able to, gently move your pet onto a towel or blanket in a quiet, cool room. You don't need to do anything else right away — there's no wrong way to handle this moment.

Call whenever you're ready

Whether it's 2pm or 2am, on a weekday or a holiday, we answer the phone ourselves — no call center, no hold music. We'll talk you through pickup and every option, at your pace.

If your pet passed away at your vet's office or an emergency clinic, we coordinate pickup directly with them — you don't have to handle that logistics yourself either. And if you're simply not sure what to do next, that's exactly what the call is for.

Prefer to call? We answer 24/7 and can usually help faster that way. If now isn't a good time to talk, the form works too — just include a phone number and we'll reach out.

Common Questions

What to expect

My dog just died at home — what do I do first?
Take a breath — there's no need to rush. Gently move your pet onto a towel or blanket in a cool room if you can. It's normal for the body to release fluids or for muscles to twitch briefly; this doesn't mean anything went wrong. When you're ready, call us at (619) 604-3219, day or night, and we'll walk you through pickup from there.
How do I know if my pet has passed away, or if they're just sleeping?
Look for the absence of breathing (no rise and fall of the chest) and no response to touch or sound. If you're at all unsure, call us or your veterinarian right away — we can talk you through what to check for.
How long can I keep my pet's body at home before calling someone?
In most cases, a pet's body can safely stay in a cool room for several hours. If it's warm in your home, lowering the thermostat or placing a cool pack near (not directly on) the body can help. There's no need to rush — call us whenever you're ready, and we'll take it from there.
Can I bury my pet in my backyard in San Diego County?
In most cases, no — it's not practical or legal for most San Diego County residents. County code requires at least three feet of soil covering the remains and a location at least 100 feet from any well, spring, or stream, and many incorporated cities such as Santee prohibit backyard burial entirely. Because of this, cremation is the practical choice for the vast majority of families in San Diego County. We're happy to explain your options when you call.
Do I need to be present when you arrive?
No. You're welcome to be present, or we can arrange the pickup even if you're not home — whatever feels right for you.
How long until I get my pet's ashes back?
Timelines vary depending on the service you choose. We'll walk you through exactly what to expect when you call.
What if my pet passed away at the vet's office?
We coordinate pickup directly with veterinary offices and shelters, so you don't have to handle those logistics yourself.
Do you care for pets other than dogs and cats?
Yes. We provide aftercare for all pets.
What areas do you serve?
We proudly serve families throughout Southern California.
Are you available at night or on weekends?
Yes — we're available 24/7, for both emergencies and non-emergencies.
How do I know my pet is in good hands?
We work exclusively with licensed, vetted and reputable crematory partners, and treat every pet with the same care we'd want for our own.
